Control

The referee showed the first yellow only after the initial 30 minutes. And it was correctly shown. Ruiz tried not to cut the actions, and only whislted when was necessary. Players tend to respect Ruiz decisions, and that´s always a good thing for a referee. This allowed him to control the game just by warning and booking little.

Nice assistance

Ruiz was also well helped by the assistants, because in Newell´s goal and also in Emelec 2nd one, the possition of the players was doubtful. But in both cases, the referees did it OK. Let´s see what happens with linemen in the next stages.

Schiavi

After mistakenly conceding a free-kick to Emelec in the middle of the field, Ruiz booked Argentinian defender Rolando Schiavi. He protested, and got a direct red from the Colombian referee (maybe he insulted Ruiz, or something like that).
