Ukraine 1 - 0 Norway
friendly · 2008-11-19 Referee: Romans Lajuks

An indication of why Ireland-Far Oer is the biggest game Lajuks ever officiated

Controversy No. 1

The referee indicated rather early that free kicks would be awarded, no matter how trivial the situation, and advantages be damned.
After 36 minutes, Lajuks awarded what could possibly be one of the cheapest penalty kicks in quite a while, after Norway's Tore Reginiusen had slight contact with Serhiy Nazarenko inside the box. This lead to Yevhen Selezniov scoring with ease from the spot.

Controversy No. 2

Shortly after halftime, Lajuks sent Norway's John Arne Riise off the field, awarding a direct red card following an exchange of words between Riise and Lajuks' assistant. A discombobulated Riise received an indication via hand-signals indicating that the sending off was for verbal abuse against a linesman.
Following the game, Riise indicated (according to his story) that he had responded to the linesman's poor call on an offside situation, saying "That's shit!".

style

Showing that he is possibly more fond of his own whistle than England's Mike Riley, Lajuks also showed a general lack of skill, a total arrogance bordering hostility when his calls were questioned by players, and giving a solid indicator as to why he has never overseen a international match of significance in his carreer.
