Webb had absolute control of this match, and he achieved that by not being overly pedantic and allowing the match to flow, great communication with the players showing them exactly who was in charge and only booking players when it was absolutely necessary. He is surely one of the fittest referees in the tournament, and he is always exactly on the spot to make a decision although he perhaps gets a bit too close sometimes.
Some seem to think that Lucio should have won a penalty in the first half. And maybe there was a minute amount of contact, but when you go down in an overly theatrical manner with extravagant leg raise as he did, then I think the referee is correct to ignore the appeals. There is no place in the game for these ridiculous reactions to minimal contact, it wasn't worthy of a penalty and this sort of simulation to try and con the referee is very unsporting.
Darren Cann continues to be impressive in this tournament, and he is probably the best assistant here on current form. The second Brazilian goal seemed to me to be offside in real time, but Cann was correct to keep the flag down - onside by a couple of inches. And Mike Mullarkey didn't get anything wrong either. At least England sent one team they can be proud of: they are real contenders for the final now I feel.
