Germany 4 - 1 England
WC 2010 round of 16 · 2010-06-27 Referee: Jorge Larrionda

What goes around comes around...

This one was definitely in...

Jorge Larrionda will sleep badly tonight as will his assistant who didn't spot that the shot was at least a foot over the line. We have seen this happening in the Bundesliga lately as well and you cannot argue against human errors. But it would be too easy to resort to referee bashing as Larrionda was a good referee for the rest of the match with a clear line, well measured decision making and optimal card-handling. Probably goalline technology would help, but the problem will remain that referees will make mistakes which will affect the outcome of the game.

It was a fair match...

England and Germany played both very positive football where the Germans had the better end. You could argue on the offside decision in the first half against England, but the weak defense sank England as much as the not-given goal did. Jorge Larrionda deserves praise on the whole, but this scene will haunt him for the rest of his life.
