Chile 1 - 2 Spain
WC 2010 group stage · 2010-06-25 Referee: Marco Rodriguez

The end justifies the means

Because

He is inconsistent in foul detection. Rodriguez always want to be in the center of attention, and with his style that passes. Because his preparation to match was poor , so he doesn't know how players behave. Torres of course dives ,Estrada , Ponce and few other Chilean are rough player and they commit lot's of fouls. So referee need to prevent that and he start well with three cards to stop Chilean roughness, but one of that yellows he not needed to show . He also could award penalty for Spain after Vidal challenge on Torres. For most of the referees who knows who easily Torres falls, this is not for penalty but with Rodriguez criterion of fouls in this match he should think twice about that. Most arguable decision had been when Rodriguez sent off Estrada for second yellow card after foul on Torres,. In that action he let great advantage , but he didn't watch what happened in duel Torres and Estrada, and he just saw end of that contact when Torres fall down. So after action had finished he sent off Estrada just on reaction which Torres made , he lay down two more minutes like he had been shot . Torres and Estrada were in contact but accidentally and Torres with his foot tripped up on Estrada knee and then hits other foot and falls. That all happened very fast and Rodriguez in this situation if he was not 100% sure to show red for Estrada but also assistant had to react. Few minutes later he had to sent off Ponce but he didn't. Also Ponce had to be show red card when he hit Torres on his leg when ball was out of play. But Marco didn't also as he forgot to show a yellow for S.Ramos. Too much mistakes for one match, but in second half he was much better, maybe because team didn't play.
