Netherlands 3 - 0 Belarus
Euro 2008 qualifiers · 2006-09-06 Referee: Howard Webb

New!

But

But then a little war started between the English referee and Dutch up coming star Robin van Persie. Van Persie dived in the Belarus penalty box, got booked, yelled something at Howard Webb who for a while after seemed to be occupied only by Van Persie's antics. Dutch coach Van Basten had to talk to his forward an probably gave him the age old advice "to score is the best revenge", which was what Van Persie did. Twice.

But

One goal scored by Kuijt was cancelled because he stood off-side, even though he got the ball in a rebound from a shot on goal (there has been talk, even among referees to do something about that rule). A counter attack by the Belarussians was stopped when Webb was warned by Dutch players for off-side, which it probably wasn't.

humour

Howard Webb is a referee who can laugh, who has humour, which is important. He is not (yet) a top referee, not consistant enough, he makes too many little mistakes and he shouldn't single out players to get even with. A referee should be above that.
