At the start of the match Leo Horn shook hands with the Soviet and Chilean captains and told them they were going to have to behave themselves. He spoke to them in Dutch; they'd understand the gist. "Gentlemen", he said. "I want decent behaviour or otherwise...", and he pointed to the exit.
Glad the Chileans had scored (because of the crowd), not showing it of course, he dreaded a Soviet equalizer, which happened. The Chile players pointed at Galba, the lines man whom, they said, had raised his flag for off-side. Horn did not want to go over to the Czechoslovakian and ask what had happened, afraid of losing his authority and of discussions and, anyway, he was sure it was a goal. He ran to the Chile captain and yelled at him in Dutch to put the ball on the centre point or he (Horn) would "kick his ass".
Chile won 2-1 and after the final whistle the players hugged Horn. The Russians complemented him and shook his hand.
