Luxembourg 0 - 1 Netherlands
Euro 2008 qualifiers · 2006-09-02 Referee: Joao Ferreira

Mediocre

Maybe

It can be difficult when one team has a possession of more than 70% which gave the impression as if Portuguese Lopes Ferreira had a preference for the underdog, giving them many times the benefit of the doubt. Almost always Luxembourg got the free-kick, both when there was no foul commited or when the foul was theirs. Or so it seemed. But the one time Luxembourg actually went for something like an attack, Lopes Ferreira was the only one who saw them making a foul against a Dutch defender. Which, maybe, makes room for the following observation: Lopes Ferreira gives all defenders the benefit over forwards. It was just that Holland did all the attacking.

mediocre

Numbers don't count, this was a match between two mediocre teams, officiated by a mediocre referee. The only thing worth noticing about Lopes Ferreira is that he uses his facial expressions like an actor.
