Penalties

Chelsea were refused two penalties in the first half, both involving pulling at corners, the more blatant being when Drogba was manhandled to the floor by Walter Samuel. Yes, slight pushes/pulls can be hard to see, but these were very clear to see and Mr Stark should have done better.

Reds

Drogba was correctly shown a straight red card for a stamp on Motta as the game came to a frenetic conclusion, but Stankovic should also have seen red shortly after for an equally shocking challenge.

Inconsistency

He was far too lenient in the first half, and did not award enough free kicks. A couple of early cautions would have helped his match control. In the second half he was far too strict, and was dishing out cards like confetti. Both approaches led to the players becoming highly frustrated. His assistants also struggled with a number of offside decisions.
