Olympiakos 0 - 1 Bordeaux
Champions League 2009-2010 round of 16 · 2010-02-23 Referee: Howard Webb

Dear oh dear Howard.

Shoot, please!

Neither side really deserved to win this match. The French team dominated possession but rarely troubled Antonis Nikopolidis, while chances were few and far between for Olympiakos. If it's shots and goals that you want, look elsewhere.

Bordeaux goal

The French league leaders managed to get on the scoresheet during the death throes of the first half. Two minutes into injury time, Webb ruled that LuaLua fouled Tremoulinas. At full speed it looked like a fair challenge, and the inevitable replays showed that LuaLua had won the ball cleanly. Bordeaux were happy to accept the free kick though, which was delivered perfectly by Gourcuff for Ciani to nod home.

Olympiakos non-goal

Webb was again in on the action at the end of the match. In a chaotic conclusion Fernando cleared a Stoltidis effort off the line before Ciani sliced a clearance which was headed home by Maresca. However, Webb's whistle had gone and the goal was disallowed, the official judging Derbyshire to have impeded Carrasso. This decision was harsh.

Out of form

Webb has not been in the best of form recently. A couple of years ago he could be relied on to take charge of the toughest matches with little fuss and few mistakes. He is generally said to be England's best, but that simply is not true. While Alan Wiley and Chris Foy might be too old for the FIFA list, Mike Dean and Andre Marriner are a class above Webb and Atkinson. It baffles me that these two are not England's representatives in the Champions League.
