Porto 2 - 1 Arsenal
Champions League 2009-2010 round of 16 · 2010-02-17 Referee: Martin Hansson

It's Martin Hansson, what do you expect?

Normal service

That's not to say he didn't make mistakes. In fact he made plenty of them, and quite frankly would you expect any less? Arsenal should have had a penalty when Rosicky was brought down by Alvaro Pereira, but it was not awarded. And a couple of Porto players should have been booked late in the first half for late tackles on Fabregas, who was not without sin himself and could have been sent off for violent conduct if Hansson had seen a nasty little push.

Porto's second goal

Here Hansson made a dreadful mess. He awarded an indirect free kick to Porto after Campbell allegedly passed the ball back to Fabianski. I remain to be convinced that this was deliberate, but the free kick was awarded regardless. Hansson then marked with his foot where the free kick should be taken from, but then let Porto take it from the wrong place. And his signalling was wrong; he should have raised his arm to indicate the kick was indirect before it was taken, not slightly after.
