The match was easy for Bjorn Kuipers - there were few fouls and nothing worthy of a card. He judged the tone of the match well, and played the advantage as much as possible; only 12 direct free kicks were awarded. It was good to see him bring play back for a free kick after Anderson could not gain an advantage - most referees seem unprepared to do this. He seemed to communicate well with the players, and was very firm when Kuszczak was wasting time and Scholes was disputing a decision, avoiding the need to issue any cautions.
In the 13th minute Wolfsburg had appeals for a penalty turned down after a challenge from Carrick. In real time the deflection of the ball made me think it was a fair tackle; it took a zoomed-in slow motion replay to confirm the foul and hence penalty. But Kuipers, who was in a good position, did not have a replay and I fully understand why he did not award the penalty. Overall he seemed to have a taste for the game, and anticipated play well - a convincing performance from a man who clearly has some talent and showed signs that he would cope well with a big, tough match.
