Portugal 2 - 1 Mexico
WC 2006 group stage · 2006-06-21 Referee: Lubos Michel'

A lot of work

Early goals

With a sixth minute goal of Maniche the game seemed to be played when Mexican defender Marquez forced a penalty for handball in the penalty box. A correct decision of Michel. At the end of the first half Mexico's Jose Fonseca's glancing header reduced Portugal's lead.

Penalty time

Penalty time Mexico's best chance to level came after 57 minutes when an elaborate but promising attack, ended with the Portuguese defender Miguel flipping Pérez off his feet in the penalty area. A correct penalty again, but Bravo drove his shot high over the bar. Pérez soon tumbled again in the penalty area under a challenge from Miguel. This time Michel decided that Pérez had dived and showed him his second yellow card of the game. A correct decision again. Michel seems to have iron nerves, but he missed the real guts to give a third penalty when an ill-judged tackle by Portugse defender Ferreira on Bravo should have resulted in another penalty for mexico. He did not do so, but he did not forget to give Maniche a booking for a deliberate handball near the halfway line. It still sad to see so good players producing so much anti-football.
