Uruguay 0 - 1 Argentina
WC 2010 qualifiers - S. America · 2009-10-14 Referee: Carlos Amarilla

One here, one there

Amarilla

It was a hard game, with hard actions and too many fouls. But it was also what we were expecting: Uruguay tend to play like this, and this Argentina of Maradona, plays very differently to how he did in his time. In the middle of this situation, Amarilla started whistling... a bit for Uruguay, another bit for Argentina. He kept the yellow score drawn, and he had to send a red to an Uruguayan because he made a very stupid foul when Argentinian Gutiérrez was about tu enter the area. Argentina´s goal came from that idiot action.

0-1

Uruguayans suspected from Amarilla. During the previous days, press said it was a "dangerous referee" and that he was going to favor Argentina. Well... the referee didn´t have a good night, but he didn´t directly influence the result. Uruguay had a good starting but then could not do the same kind of game that they did against Ecuador in Quito. After the game, Uruguayan coach Tabárez accused again Amarilla of having "whistled too much", and in "Argentina way".

Mistakes

The referee showed 8 yellows. 2 of them should have been direct reds, one each. But as I said, he didn´t want problems... For the same reason, when Heinze pushed an Uruguayan attacker inside Arg area, the referee from Paraguay just said "go on !!". An easier decision, and a more confortable ending.

Celebrations?

Argentina qualified to the World Cup, but I think there´s nothing to be proud about, except for the effort of some of the players. The national team didn´t have ideas and had to wait for the final game to celebrate the qualification. There are lots of things to check and improve. Uruguay will play an extra game against Costa Rica, and they also will have to improve if they want to get their South African trip.

Maradona

After the game, an excited Diego Maradona offered a press conference. He took revenge of previous press criticism, and said he dedicated the victory to "all the Argentinians, except for the press". To them, he dedicated a rude insult: "Suck it to me", he said. A shame.
