Manchester United 2 - 1 Wolfsburg
Champions League 2009-2010 group stage · 2009-09-30 Referee: Viktor Kassai

Not Good

Foul detection

Kassai's foul recognition was bad. He gave any number of free kicks for fouls that simply had not been committed. One in particular springs to mind from the first half, where Ryan Giggs had clearly won the ball in an extremely skillful fair tackle, which Kassai decided to punish. While the two cards he showed were justified, Josue should have been shown a yellow for a challenge on Anderson and Vidic should have been shown a second yellow for a late tackle from behind on Dzeko in the 87th minute.

Penalty?

Very early in the game Manchester United should have had a penalty when the ball was handled in the Wolfsburg box. Both Kassai and the assistant on the near side had good views, so why a penalty was not awarded is hard to explain. There can be no excuse when the ball touches an arm that is raised high, a clearcut handball.

Offside

The assistants got three crucial decisions wrong. The man on the near side gave a phantom offside against Dimitar Berbatov in the first half, with United slotting the ball home before the whistle went. John O'Shea was the player who was offside, but he did not become involved with the play, so no offence was committed. Ryan Giggs had a second half goal chalked off when the far side assistant ruled him offside despite the ball coming off a Wolfsburg player. Meanwhile, the near side assistant made another mistake, with Dzeko being offside when he headed the ball home, the flag wrongly staying down on that occasion.

Positioning

If Kassai ever played, he must have been a winger. For much of the match he hugged the touchline, rarely venturing to the centre of the pitch. He was often a long way from play when called upon to make a decision, perhaps that is why he got so much wrong. The assistant on the near side was very sluggish, and struggled to keep up with play in the first half when United were advancing rapidly up his half of the pitch.
