This is the first time I have seen Undiano Mallenco, and I was quite impressed by him. While it was a fairly easy match to referee, he still had to make some big decisions and he got them right. England had early appeals for a penalty after the ball hit a Croatian arm, but Mallenco correctly ruled that it was not deliberate. However, when Aaron Lennon was brought down by Josip Simunic in the box, he showed no hesitation in pointing to the spot. Eduardo's later claim for a penalty was flatly refused - it was hard to see any contact, and it would have been outside the box in any case.
I was generally impressed by his foul detection, and his assistants were fairly sharp. They missed one tight offside call, but England did not score the resulting chance so they got away with it. Judging by this performance, I think FIFA are right to select him over Mejuto Gonzalez for the world cup, and he should do well there.
