Porto 0 - 1 Manchester United
Champions League 2008-2009 1/4 finals · 2009-04-15 Referee: Massimo Busacca

A tense match

No big decisions

This was an easy match for Massimo Busacca, who did not have to make any major calls. He refereed in a low-key and reasonably light hearted manner. The game was allowed to flow quite well and the players seemed to be happy with the way he handled the match.

The devil's in the details

Busacca was nearly always in a good position, and read the match well. Despite this good positioning he failed to spot a number of obvious free kicks, but awarded several for non-existant offences. Without a big decision to distract the attention, his other decision making was exposed as decidedly mediocre. However, he got away with it by officiating with avuncular good will.

Standard, not stand out

As last week for Konrad Plautz, the tie was a bit too easy to referee. As such the decision making was not the best. In the end though, the result was a fair reflection of play so who cares if the ref got the odd free kick wrong? I doubt many people will remember Busacca was the referee, the sign of a job well done.
