He is one of the best referees but sometimes he has a blackout. Like in this match. For Croatians Lubos was the main reason why they lost match, but if the result would be not so good for England, they probably would have complained about his arbitrage.
From the beginning he whistled for almost every minor contact, he didn't keep peace on the field and he made mistakes, one after another. First he didn't award a free kick after James was fouled in his box, and the Croatian team almost scored. The second dubious decision was when he didn't award a penalty for England. Simunic and Heskey were in a duel, pulling shirts and arms, some referees would award a penalty some would not, let's say that Michel was right.
The third decision was an evident mistake, Simunic deserved a second yellow for a foul on Rooney. The fourth most disputable decision was the direct red card for Kovac after his arm or elbow hit Jo Cole's head. What happened? Kovac jumped with his arm in the air and Cole was hit. There was a lot of blood after that punch. Michel saw an English foul, then he thought it over, and he wanted to book Kovac but when he saw Cole's head, he changed his mind and showed him red. Even if Kovac hadn't intent to hit Cole his movement was very uncautious so maybe Michel was right, but from the other point of view Kovac didn't hit Cole with his elbow so maybe a yellow was enough?
The fifth mistake was when Lubos disallowed England a goal after Heskey fouled on Simunic. Very similar to the second dubious decision, but this timen Lubos awarded a free kickl.
The sixth mistake: Lubos didn't see a foul after Srna played very high with his leg, very near Terry's head, but Lubos allowed it and Croatia scored.
That was the most important dubious decision. To write about his criteria for fouls and cards I don't have enough space. This was not Lubos' night. His assistants were much better.
After 1994 and 35 matches, Croatia finally lost an official home match in a qualification for WC or EURO. England outplayed Croatia with their weapon: ball possession and counter-attack, and England now have a new star Theo Walcott who scored a hat-trick.
Even though I'm a Croat, I'm ashamed of supporters who don't haven respect for a foreign anthem and for those who think that another colour of skin is reason for abuse and monkey-sounds. Those kind of supporters are not just the problem in Croatia even some players are racist and UEFA has to think more about this problem.
