Macedonia 1 - 2 Netherlands

precision work

assistants

I could understand Macedonian anger when their first goal was canceled, but I replayed it a couple of times and yes: it was off-side. Maybe not more than 30 inches, but still. The ball went almost out a couple of times, almost. Just a little over the line, but not enough. Refereeing is precision work. Good assistants, those Poles.

Gilewski

But I'm not sure about Gilewski. No one was sure about Gilewski and that was his own doing. For every ten good decisions he made one bad one and when the ref makes bad decisions, things can get a little out of hand. Van de Vaart's yellow card for instance. The Dutch midfielder was angry when his team didn't get a free kick earlier. Sure, he deserved getting booked, but you could blame Gilewski as well.
Gilewski was not fooled by dives and tricks though, he knew whom he was going to take charge off.

match

First The Netherlands were on top, with a 68 % possession, but never getting anywhere near the goal. Then they scored twice and Macedonia started playing. Their play was much more rough and pushy and that was the moment when a good ref was needed. I think Gilewski lost it slightly at the end.
