Olympic Games 2008 group stage · 2008-08-13 Referee: Abdullah Al Hilali

The Omani

Style

The worst thing of this Omani referee is that the players don´t seem to respect him (at least, Serbians didn´t). Perhaps because he looks insecure, or because he makes mistakes too often. But during this game, I saw two incredible things: first, when Argentina was about to play a free-kick and Al Hilali was locating the barrier, a Serbian player made a gesture like saying "go away". Later, a worse thing: Al Hilali conceded a free kick to Argentina after a foul against Acosta, but... the Serbians played the ball, and not the Argentinians. What did the referee do?? Nothing... it went on.

Penalties, booking

The Omani didn´t do everything wrong: the first penalty was very correctly conceded. And at least a half of the booking was also OK. The second penalty was doubtful, and in doubtful actions referees shouldn´t concede penalties; they must be sure about it. Al Hilali made that 2nd penalty to be shot again because the Serbian GK had advanced too much, which was OK (all in all, Argentina missed it). But he showed cards for petty things and left other hard actions without punishment.

Red card

After the match ended, Serbian Rajkovic was sent-off by Al Hilali. Maybe because of protesting or something like that. He had also sent-off Serbian Tosic after showing him the 2nd yellow card, which could have been avoided.
