LDU Quito 4 - 2 Fluminense
Copa Libertadores 2008 final · 2008-06-25 Referee: Carlos Chandía

Correct and great

Correct

Chandía had refereed one Libertadores final (2004, 2nd leg) so this wasn´t something new to him. However, the Cup is being disputed by two teams that have never won it, which makes it a bit more interesting in their countries and makes their fans to be even more excited about it. This was evident in the great Casa Blanca stadium, full of noisy Ecuadorians supporting their team. Chandía could manage this perfectly. He was absolutely neutral, and he was right with the important things. He tried to make the game fluent, talked, and he booked correctly. Liga players - and the hole stadium - shouted for a handball that never happened inside the Fluminense area, and the referee understood that it hadn´t been intentional. He should have shown one more yellow, maybe two... but nothing very important. Assistants were OK. One of them missed a handball near him, but this didn´t mean very much to the match. They were correct when flagging off-sides and all that. The referee team had a good night.

The game was excellent, a perfect 1st half by Liga. The Ecuadorians crushed Fluminense during the initial 45 minutes (4-1), playing the best football seen in this Cup. Then, during the 2nd half, Fluminense could score their 2nd goal, but going to Maracaná with a 2-goal difference is a very convenient deal for Liga Deportiva Universitaria from Quito.
