Russia 0 - 3 Spain
Euro 2008 1/2 finals · 2008-06-26 Referee: Frank de Bleeckere

A routine job

penalty!

Some will say that was a penalty for Spain when Torres was brought down in the box just before the first 15 minutes were up. It wasn't much of a foul though and Torres didn't look too disgusted about Frank's decision to award a free kick to the Russians instead. It was an OK call, given the circumstances.

weighing

Frank was constantly weighing this against that, favoring this over that, trying to be faithful to the spirit of this match. He pulled it off. I admire him for that.

talent and tactics

What made the Russians lose it? What made them look so miserable and the Spanish so macho? Ehm.. tactics?

(Frank on this match

The weather was bad, the Belgians were nervous but focused. Assistant ref Alex Verstaeten did not wave his flag before the second Spanish goal, De Bleeckere wasn't sure, but seeing the video he saw Verstaeten was right. Frank writes his idea was to let the teams play and interfere as little as possible. After the match they were very tired but content.)
