Fluminense 3 - 1 LDU Quito
Copa Libertadores 2008 final · 2008-07-02 Referee: Hector Baldassi

Fluminense 5 (1) - (3) 5 LDU Quito

1 referee big mistake

Baldassi started trying to officiate his way ... he likes not to use too many cards, and loves gesturing and talking with the players. At the beginning this seemed to be effective, but later he and the assistants seriously failed in sensitive actions, that undoubtly influenced the final result. The first big spot took place during the 1st time, when Brazilian Washington was fouled by an Ecuadorian defender when was just about to overcome the Liga goalie. Baldassi should have conceded a penalty and showed a direct red to the Liga defender, but he didn´t consider it as a foul.

2 assistants big mistakes

Both, Casas and Maidana, also took their part in the mess. During the first half, the first assistant flagged when a Fluminense player was overcoming (and was about to be fouled by) the goalkeeper. It could have been goal, or penalty, or something ... well, the lineman said off-side (perhaps the only incorrect decision). The other assistant didn´t want to be out of the party and, when at the 118th minute Liga scored their 2nd goal (the one that could have given them the Cup), also flagged after seeing a non-existent off-side.

So

They didn´t to everything wrong ... Baldassi always kept control, and booked properly most of the times. He tried to be always near the actions. But with those mistakes, I can´t say that my compatriots have passed this test. I´m sure, however, that they will have another chance. Football always gives it to everybody.
