Mali 1 - 0 Benin
African Nations Cup 2008 group stage · 2008-01-21 Referee: Jerome Damon

Power

old plumbers

Great African players all go to Europe, old not so great European coaches all seem to go to Africa. Men in their sixties, cowboys of international football. The Bernt Stange type, doing their best and hoping they'll get paid in the end. The two coaches in this match didn't look like coaches but more like old plumbers on a Thai beach.

Jerome Damon

Jerome Damon is an experienced international referee who survived the South African corruption scandal. Luckily for us he awarded a penalty to Mali, otherwise nothing at all would have happened in this match. He stood really close and at the right angle. Maybe he whistled a bit too often, but maybe he knows he has to with players like these.

match

Mali has two star players, Benin has a player who makes goals in Sweden, but three good players don't make a good match.
