Schalke 04 3 - 0 PSV
Champions League 2005-2006 group stage · 2005-11-23 Referee: Lubos Michel'

Terrible

Some, others

Some referees show themselves to the players by making a bold statement: the first offender gets shown a yellow card, this is how I work, so watch it. Other referees wait, they want to know how the game evolves, whether there's any animosity between the teams or players. There are more ways to show yourself, Lubos Michel showed himself by whisteling for everything. For every little push, shove, touch and kick he stopped the game, even when the player who was touched wanted to go on playing, and thus taking the flow out of the match.

Used

The players got used to Lubos Michel's ways and anticipated on his whisteling by stopping for a second when somebody fell even when Michel didnt'whistle, which happened once or twice.

Didn't and did

The Slovak did whistle when PSV Ooijer touched the ball with his hand in the box, he didn't when a Schalke player did the same. (The defender jumped, made himself broad by using his arms and blocked a shot). He did however whistle when PSV's Sibon made a sliding and the Schalke's Fabian Ernst fell: another penalty. Sure, it's difficult to see that a player falls whitout being touched (as the television audience could see) Lubos Michel might be excused for it. But a hands ball is just that. Don't get me wrong Schalke palyed much better than PSV and deserved to win, but both teams lost against the referee, who lead as if two enemies were fighting for their lives, using every dirty trick possible.

Advise

A word of advise to the teams who get Lubos Michel as a referee: since he considers every contact between players an offence, try to play as much in the other team's penalty box.
