Already in the 14th minute Vassaras took the first opportunity to give a penalty. On the edge of the penalty box Ibrahimovic was pushed by Kromkamp. It was a foul, but not a big one. Almost every other referee would have decided to give a free kick, but Vassaras chose to award a penalty. After this 1-0 Inter tried to play cat and mouse: ruthless defending and sharp countering. After the second goal, a beautiful header by Ibrahimovic, the game was settled.
There were some doubtful calls. A very clear off side by Inter in the first half went by unnoticed. A ball from a Inter defender to the goalkeeper went by unnoticed. A push on PSV player Farfan in the penaltybox went by unnoticed.
All in all I can't say Vassares is that bad. He is a man who lives by the book, spending too much time on details and curiously enough the advantage at the end is always for the bigger team.
At the end Vassares tried to level things. He showed Chivu a red card, but the damage was already done.
It was a bad choice of UEFA to select Vassaras for this match. Vassaras is a better choice for games with teams that have less status. Vassaras simply misses the guts for making unpopular decisions. It will not surprise me though that UEFA is pleased with Vassaras' refereeing. We will probably see him again soon.
