The penalty or just a fall?

The moment that almost made history

The key decision came shortly before half time when Kiraly dropped the ball. The first Icelander stumbled over him so the very attentive Karasev already thought about whistling. The second Icelandic player fell in a spectacular manner but actually already before actually being slighthly touched by the defender. The ref though in a good position pointed to the spot: 1-0 for Iceland which almost resulted in the first historic win for Iceland at their first Euro.

Karasev

Karasev was close to the action, highly attentive and sometimes a bit overmotivated it seemed to me. So he whistled for almost everything which was in contrast to most of the refs at this tournament. He seemed to fall easily for Iceland delay and fall tactics in the second half. Hungary got a late equaliser but were highly frustrated by their own lack of precision and Karasev's rather nitpicky approach.

Another penalty?

When a Hungarian player held back an icelandic player in stoppage time who fell inside the box, I almost thought he'd give a second one. The foul commenced clearly outside the box and when he had given a second one, I would have feared for his reputation. Iceland almost got a second goal, but fate decided wisely for a deflection just wide and a draw which seems a fair result to me. Karasev is an excellent ref in terms of watching, but I cannot agree with soe of his calls and he almost lost it in the end. At least another yellow seemed to be given after a dive, so not his best performance.
