It is a rule that Dutch championships are won by PSV, Ajax or Feyenoord. So, it is no wonder that confrontations between these teams are decicive for the Dutch championship. All supporters hope that only the best referees are asked for these games.
It was in the eleventh minute of the ninth game of this championship that Vinks decided to give PSV an allmost unreachable lead over Ajax. When PSV forward Farfan took a dive into the penaltybox, without Ajax defender Emanuelson touching him, Vink decided to give a penalty. A great mistake, publicly shown by numurous camaras afterwards. He was too far away to make such a decision. He should nver have done it.
For more than hour Ajax tried to make the best of it. They got a few oportunities but the game never reached the great play of former encounters. Both teams were tired of their championleague games. Frustration got high though. Ajax forward Pienaar deserved a red booking when he kicked PSV midfielder Affelay for no reason at all. PSV got some opportunities in the last quarter, but forgot to score. The game just faded out in tiredness, leaving PSV with eight points ahead; an easy lead to prolonge their championship.
Everybody makes mistakes... Especially referees because they have to make decisions in split seconds. Let's hope though that referees make mistakes in games with lesser value. In decisive games you must be really sure what you do. Before you realise you not only could have given panalties away, but also championships....
