Juventus 2 - 1 Real Madrid
Champions League 2014 - 2015 1/2 final · 2015-05-05 Referee: Martin Atkinson

Well-controlled game by Atkinson

Card Policy

Every match I have seen from Atkinson so far, he was struggling with his card policy. We have seen that in the Schalke game, the Sevilla game and in the Bayern game. Carvajal did not get booked, not even when he stopped a 100% promising attack. A doubt between DOGSO and SPA could have been understood, but no-card is absolutely wrong. It becomes even worse if we see that some minutes before that, Carvajal could have got a YC. In the end, when he committed his third foul within 10 minutes he became a YC, but this time I doubt or he deserved a card for that situation. It was no promising attack, and no harsh foul. On the other hand, the YC for Marcelo was very well done, just like for example the YC for Chiellini. The YC dor dissent could have been prevented by giving the YC for Carvajal immediately, so that his descision was clear immediately. The YC for Tevez could be given, but was not consistent.

Foul detection

Atkinson has a good foul detection. The penalty was well-spotted and he letted the game flow. Well done!

Following and signals

Atkinson looks older than he is. Probably he also looks slower than he is, cause he usually is at the right spot. He could improve a bit on his signals though. For example, his signal for the first throw-in was more powerful than his signal for the first foul. His communication when he awarded the penalty was not the strongest.
