Questionable

Carballo

Carballo did just that however. Many dangerous tackles and overly physical challenges went unpunished. As Gefluegel pointed out in his report on Carballo's previous match here, this may be the result of instructions given by FIFA. In this match at least it seemed totally out of place.

Foul?

In the second half, as could be expected, he seemed to want to make up for his overly lenient stance in the first half. The call against Columbia's star player James seemed to have been made in this spirit. The foul was not really a foul, a clumsy challenge; James slid over the grass and toppled his man, clearly retracting his legs as he did so. Still in Carballo's opinion this light offence merited a yellow card and a free kick. An absurd contrast with all the much more serious fouls he had waved before. This call also hugely influenced the game, since the Brazilians scored from this opportunity.

Questionable

All in all a questionable performance, even though he held his ground reasonably well in a rather difficult match. His position and fitness were good and even his style was passable this time. Still he didn't protect the players. I feel a few yellow cards in the first half would have been in order and would have helped the game greatly.
