Tonight we witnessed Kreisliga versus world class - Schalke "ein Satz mit x - das war wohl nix" going down like novices 1-6 at home against Real Madrid who were always looking like the only team to win this. In the first ten minutes, Schalke had more possession and looked good but the blatant lack of finishing menace around the box was too obvious. The first shot on their goal was in, the second, too and the third went on to the inner post. They were naive, poor and completely out of depth - it was a shocking demolition for a supposedly strong home side. It hurted to watch by sheer lack of class - Real was great, but this was too much of a difference to find it attractive.
Howard was having a rather lame evening, he had only a few freekicks to give and he explained in his usual wordy manner which so often had worked well in calm matches. In more aggressive circumstances, he always looks a bit wobbly but this was so clear that there wasn't an issue. Great fitness as usual, good match flow - two probably wrong and close offside decsisions right at the beginning (but that were the only things to question).
