Uruguay 1 - 3 Mexico
Copa America 2007 3rd place · 2007-07-14 Referee: Mauricio Reinoso Fabara

3rd place

Context

We like to say that referees must know not only the rules or FIFA recommendations, but also understand what kind of match they are officiating, which teams are playing and what the players may be feeling. Reinoso was tense and, during some moments, he acted too severely.

Penalties

Firstly, Reinoso didn't see a penalty for Mexico. Then, Uruguay scored, and a few minutes later Reinoso saw Lugano holding Mexico's Gerardo Torrado inside the Uruguayan area and brushing him with the elbow. The referee correctly decided to give a penalty to Mexico, but he really exagerated when he showed Lugano the red. This was not a red card action; a yellow would have been enough. After this episode, the "game-temperature" increased, because of Reinoso's decision, and there were some skirmishes. Nothing very important, but...

Whistles

Appart from this, the Ecuadorian didn't make big mistakes. But he cut the action too frequently; the game was fluent and could have been even more so with a more skilful referee.

Fair

Mexico obtained the 3rd place and that's fair. Uruguay had a very good match against Venezuela and also against Brazil, but their 1st round wasn't good at all. Mexico played a nice football and had to leave the tournament only after being defeated by a powerful Argentina. Meanwhile, both teams should be satisfied: they did their best.
