The teams decide on playing a disruptive style and the official goes along From the very start it was clear that the teams will not allow a clear well organized attack and certainly will not allow a quick counter attack. At the 6th minute of play Campbell allows a great "Play On Advantage" for Honduras that almost ends in a goal. However, I think that was the only good point of his game. There were opportunities on both sides to give a stern warning, or a YC for tactical foul, but maybe he did not think that the game needed it. By the 28th minute the teams accumulated 14 fouls and the officials considered them as "just a foul". Granted, none of them to that point were violent or reckless but several were tactical to break down a developing attack.
30 minutes into the game Costa Rica's #9 jumps into an attacking player from the blind side that Campbell decided warranted a YC. He was in good position to make the call and to me it is a clear Red Card. I suspect that Mr. Campbell got himself into a corner by not setting the tone of the game early and he hoped that a YC would settling the game down. However, in the 33rd minute a promising Honduras attack and a Honduras forward starts a horizontal run and catches the defender "napping". If he received the pass he has a clear shot on goal. Costa Rica #3 "appears" to hit him around the neck (could have been shoulder) and stops the run. The pass goes to the left outside player that does get a shot off. It is possible that Campbell did not see the foul. He was trying to catch up to the counter attack and may not have been in good position to see the foul, but since it was right on the area of the 2nd to the last defender the AR2 should have had a clear view. It was in his area of focus. OK, they may have missed it, but then 36th minute Honduras #2 is attacking and CR keeper is coming out to block the angle. Honduras player challenges for the ball with cleats up and over the ball into the keeper. No problem selling the Red Card, but Campbell once again thinks that it is just a YC. At this point I am expecting that this game could have a serious altercation, but fortunately that never materializes.
About an hour into the game and Honduras receives a well deserved YC for a nasty tackle and 10 minutes later CR #11 receives a YC for no reason. In fact, I think the foul should be against Honduras. Campbell is forgiven; at this point CR is focused on tying up the game and starts to play great soccer while Honduras is playing reasonable defense trying to preserve the lead.
The positive aspect to the officiating is that Campbell is in great shape and does a decent job being at the right place at the right time. He was able to to quickly react to potential problems between players and he was in good position to make the calls. Most of the calls were correct, the problem was only the color of the card or not giving the card. Foul recognition was good, foul discrimination was not good in this game. I suspect that he will not have the final game of the Gold Cup 2013.
