Argentina 4 - 0 Peru
Copa America 2007 1/4 finals · 2007-07-08 Referee: Carlos Eugenio Simón

Signs

Decision

Argentina and Peru had played just 1 minute and a half when Acasiete knocked down Milito. Simón could have only cautioned the Peru defender, but he chose to show the first yellow. It was a very good signal: what could have been a violent match, was a normal - and during some moments, a calm - football game.

Change

Simón was very solid here. Nothing to do with his refereeing in the Argentina - Colombia match: today he was much more energetic. He correctly booked Ayala and De la Haza, and he was very well helped by his assistants: Ednilson Corona from Brazil and Juan Arroyo from Bolivia. Maybe he should have shown a 2nd yellow to Ayala, but the referee felt the defender's foul was not hard enough to warrant that.

Improvement

This Brazilian referee started with a weak performance in Arg - Col and now ends - because this may have been his last time in this Cup - with a much more solid job. This one and not the previous, is the kind of referee that we need to have.
