In the rollercoaster ride of his career Webb is back at the top because he met two tactically disciplined teams who behaved themselves. Give him the Poland-Greece match of the afternoon and you would have seen (unregarded the history he has with Poland from 2008) him struggling a lot more I think. He has no strategy for ugly matches like a lot of the refs of the day. This why when the going gets really tough they all look very weak.
You all know Webb for his positive radiant british Bobbylike-policeman-attitude in which you could easily imagine him helping the lost old lady across a very busy High Street. But with notorious ASBO-youth offenders, this may be a different story. Great fitness, clear view, advantage and good decisions but no sanctions whatsoever. He wanted to finish without cards which is a dangerous approach in my mind.
The Russians impressed with their physical and technical supremacy but I think one or two cards for them would have been the safer choice. The tournament may go good for Webb - at least he had a head start. If he gets a tough match, the rollercoaster may change the direction.
