Atlético de Madrid 2 - 1 Hannover
Europa League 2011 - 2012 1/4 finals · 2012-03-29 Referee: Stéphane Lannoy

A very difficult evening for Stephane Lannoy

Handballs...

Four or five penalty appeals in the Hannover box, but even with the Spanish glasses most of them clearly not deliberate. Maybe one with a lot of good will could be given, but in a match like this, don't give soft penaltys when you can't control the teams. Save choice in my opinion.

Control by soft calls

As Lannoy had problems with both teams, he chose a very tight match practice. A lot of freekicks was given, many of those soft. But yet again, as both sides were fighting over everything, not the worst thing on earth to do. He allowed a lot of discussing and had no tight grip on indiscipline (typical Lannoy). Nevertheless, he punished serious fouls and gave seven yellows which I found alright. With another ref, both teams wouldn't have finished with eleven men.

Cool finish

He was again cool and collected in the last minutes of the match when the Spanish tried to bottle things up. I still remain unconvinced by his way although UEFA seems to like him a lot. Really fierce teams will tear him to pieces though (see WC 2010 Brasil againt Ivory coast). Nothing changed since then.
