Atlético de Madrid 3 - 1 Besiktas
Europa League 2011 - 2012 round of 16 · 2012-03-08 Referee: Jonas Eriksson

The best team won, but...

Referee team

Referee in charge was Eriksson from Sweden, with Nilsson and Klasenius as assistants. UEFA maybe considered important this match, and potentially difficult. In first half, the first assistant Nilsson, had many calls to do. He did a mistake in 23' when he flagged offside for a Atletico player. The score was still 0-0 and it was a important situation, in which they would have scored. Anyway, this mistake did not affect so much the game, because a few minutes later, Atletico scored 3 goals in a row. Furthermore, it's important to report that the same assistant did 5 right calls about offside in first half. Excellent NO FLAG in the 2-0 action. In 35' there was the first considerable foul of the game, punishable maybe by YC, but Eriksson decided to keep his cards. In second half, the most important situation was in 51', when Salvio, fighting to reach the ball against an opponent, fell in the penalty area. My opinion is that when we have this kind of contacts, with both players wriggling to reach the ball, it's really difficult to understand who commits foul, and if it's a real foul. Of course, it was not a clear situation, and I think Eriksson, even though not so close to action, took the right decision. Both cards of the match were correct: the first was for a brutal tackle without any chance to catch the ball. This situation happened in front of the second assistant, Klasenius, which immediately reported it to the referee. Well done. The second card was several minutes later, again to a Turkish player. It was for complaints after a whistled foul.

Overall

Overall, it was a good performance by Eriksson. The only clear mistake was the wrong offside call by Nilsson in first half. Not so crucial for the match.
