Twente 1 - 0 Schalke 04
Europa League 2011 - 2012 round of 16 · 2012-03-08 Referee: Craig Thomson

Lucky Luuk

trip

Twente forward Luuk de Jong tripped over his own leg while running at full speed towards the Schalke goal. Now that was a really good trick. And really hard to do too. Too hard in fact, almost impossible, and knowing De Jong he didnt do that on purpose. Seeing the replays you can see Matip accidentally touching De Jong's leg with his knee. That leg hit the other one and De Jong tripped. Not a dive, but not a foul either. Not a red card and definitely not a penalty since it wasn't in the box, but you could argue about that last thing, it was hard to see (and it doesn't matter).

AR(R)

Thomson, who had been very lenient until then, chose for the worst option. He immediately pulled his red card, while he was still relatively far off, but two of his assistants weren't. In fact Thomson went to talk to his AR after he had shown his card. Almost impossible to retract it then: "Sorry guys, it isn't a foul after all, so no red card and no penalty, you can come back now and please continue the match". He should have had that talk before he made his decision.

history

These two teams have a history, but it's a history of friendship, of exchanging players and coaches, even the fans like each other. And the friendliness and respect was obvious during the first half. No hard tackles, nothing really bad, hardly any fouls at all. And both teams were very careful not to make mistakes. It took Craig Thomson 41 minutes to do something that caused some mumbling, mainly among the spectators.
