Champions League 2011-2012 round of 16 · 2012-03-06 Referee: Damir Skomina

Roller Coaster Performance

First Half

Skomia got off to a strong start and asserted his authority early by booking Van Bommel (which probably saved him some trouble later on). His general style seemed to mirror that of a premier league referee which likely helped Arsenal's cause as his positioning was usually far from the play compared to other Elite referees.

Penalty

To be honest, I'm not sure if Skomina would have given the penalty if it had not been for his Additional Assistant Referee Slavko Vincic's advice. With that said, I was troubled by his hesitation to quickly point to the spot after a clear foul.

Shaky Second Half

Throughout the match, Skomina's only consistently apparent flaw was his positioning. This led to a few questionable if not flat out wrong decisions resulting in a loss of respect from both sides. For example, he fell for a few Milan dives and gave an obviously wrong goal kick after which he had to book two Milan players for justified protests.

Wrap Up

Skomina did well to control this incredible match with an equally incredible atmosphere. He played a few good advantages that gave the game a nice flow and his assistants and additional assistants were faultless from what I saw. Although I didn't like some of his odd gestures at every physical contact, it was reassuring to know that he did in fact notice all aspects of play. He did manage to end the match at around 92:17 although he added three minutes...odd
