The first match had ended in a 2-2 draw, thus a slight advantage for the home team. It was tough match and Van der Kroft quickly showed three yellows to Borussia. It was 1-1 at the start of the second half when the Dutchman canceled a Borussia goal for off-side. He actually overruled his linesman (Ben Hoppenbrouwer) who pointed a goal. A little later Borussia scored again, this time Van der Kroft pointed at the centre mark, but the same linesman ran towards him telling he had seen a foul. Goal canceled.
The match ended 1-1 making Madrid the winner on aggregate.
There is always "they" and "some people". Well Some people said both canceled goals were legitimate. The Germans were furious. Van der Kroft got a lot of hate-mail (letters, old school ;)) . Allegations were made about the Dutch hating the Germans because of the war. Because of the lost final of 1974.
