Manchester City 2 - 0 Bayern Munich
Champions League 2011-2012 group stage · 2011-12-07 Referee: Stéphane Lannoy

This is the kind of match Lannoy can handle

Calls

His foul detection was much better than in his previous matches, but this does not mean that he was faultless. Some strange calls were apparent, e.g. a weird free kick, it was a prime example of when to apply the advantage rule, but he whistled. Some other aspects annoyed me again: even though he was totally right when disallowing Man City's goal due to a foul on the goalkeeper, it took him about 2 or 3 seconds to make this call. He does not always seem to be a self-confident referee; furthermore, the match was very easy to handle. But at least we have received a very positive impression of the Frenchman yesterday, and in a direct duel with Moen, he could win, as the Norwegian had some strange calls yesterday. But this is another match..

Falsification of competition?

Bayern spared 5 important players. The result was a lineup which never played before in this form. You can say that their coach had good reasons, but you have to ask yourself as coach what you would say or how you would react if your opponent would do that. Napoli probably were a bit shocked about Bayern's lineup as their progress depended on this result. But concerning this issue (falsification of competition), there is more need to ask questions in group D..

UEFA Press Kit

This is a phrase taken from the UEFA press kit: "Born in Boulogne-sur-Mer, Stéphane Lannoy is particularly regarded for his physical fitness and ability to communicate with players." Well.....
