Ajax 0 - 3 Real Madrid
Champions League 2011-2012 group stage · 2011-12-07 Referee: Manuel Jorge de Sousa

The B-team

then

The assistant on the Ajax side saw an off-side that wasn't. Bad enough, but mistakes happen.
The guy on the other side (Santos) saw two off-sides that weren't, but those were really bad mistakes because De Souza had to cancel two Ajax goals because of them.

then

Off course both audience and Ajax players were irritated to say the least (I threw a book at my tv) and the Portuguese ref had to shorten his reigns. De Souza started whistling for the little things he'd let go at first. Necessary perhaps, but this increased the irritations. Luckily for the officials there is a tea break.

and then

it was back to normal again and de Souza back to his old self. But nothing much happened, so I can't be sure what he'd have done if another mistake had been made.

match

Both sides played a B-team but for different reasons. Madrid because of a lack of interest, Ajax because of injuries. When Madrid play second choice players they still have a good team. Ajax are different. They went into their pivotal Champions League match, at home, without any forwards to speak of.
Come to think of it, Manuel de Souza also brought a B-team.

HUH?

Ajax and Lyon were fighting for the second place in their group. Lyon had to score at least 5 goals more than Ajax, and only if Ajax and Madrid didn't draw. Lyon scored 7 goals against 1 for Zagreb which scored first. A classic fix scenario. I only saw the goals of that match and what I saw was Zagreb playing very badly and a goalie jumping over the ball and forgetting to use his arms. Some goals were even beyond what you see in Asian matches. I demand an explanation.
