It started superbly for the young, dynamic side from Dortmund: they led 1-0 pretty early and had many good attempts by Götze to score other 2 or 3 goals. After the 1-0, there was a serious situation in the penalty area.
Absolutely justified. A brutal foul. Kehl who had to leave the stadium and to go into the hospital immediately was fouled by Mbia, he was hit in his face. The foot of the French defender was too high, it was surely no deliberate foul, but a negligant one in a dangerous position. To my mind, a clear red card. Webb directly issued a yellow one, there was no second of hesitation only to book Mbia. Anyway, everything seemed to be perfect for Dortmund, a 2-0 lead, they could have scored the 3-0. Then Mike Dean shocked the stadium with 5 minutes of added time. It was however justified, even though 3 or 4 minutes would have been enough as well. It happened what always happens in such situations: the 2-1 was scored in 45+4...
Strong perfomance, good assistant referees, correct yellow cards. But...he was more likely too lenient. If you miss perhaps two or three fouls when you have a lenient style, that is ok, but he missed simply too much clear fouls and did not avoid some troubles in the 2nd half in an adequate way. But he showed his experience throughout the whole match.
2-2, 2-3. Undeserved. Marseille are in the next round but what I can report every opponent which will be allocated to the French team: do not fear them, it was luck. Much, very much luck.
