The card policy thing...

What is it that some referees seem to find it very difficult to get out the cards at the right moment to set the tone for the match. This is what we call in referee German speak "Einstieg" - i.e. the "opener" meaning the moment when you book the first player which is a somewhat crucial part of the discipline control. Cünyet Cakir had several chances to book in the first half, but he kept his cards in the pocket and talked his way through. He missed this possible time frame and therefore the whole card policy went astray. He booked Timoshtchuk for a rather soft foul in minute 53, and when Marchena got out his axe three minutes later, this yellow was of a very dark colour (could have been easily red). Marchena fouled again twice (59th/77th), but remained on the pitch which was asking for trouble in my mind. Schweinsteiger (77th) got booked for unsportmanlike behaviour, because he asked why Marchena was still there. He was right, but he wasn't the person to decide on this.

Bayern Munich looked the better side...

Villareal was rather disappointing as Bayern Munich looked the better side all match long. Cünyet Cakir had an fairly easy match, but if he had to referee a first category match in the competitive phase like this, he would look good in terms of game management and would sink in terms of discipline control (but that's only my opinion).

Second thoughts

At first, I deduced a full mark for the card policy, but on second thoughts this is too much - the question mark remains for me. Still, after reconsidering it wasn't quite a full 8 for my marking scheme, but that's my nasty me.
