Uruguay u20 1 - 1 New Zealand u20
WC 2011 u20 group stage · 2011-08-02 Referee: Cuneyt Cakir

I expected much more..

Calls

Well, just to start with the smaller ones: his card policy was overall good and what I liked was that he booked a New Zealander for requesting a yellow card to Uruguay. I hoped this misconduct would be always cautioned with a yellow card. Then, he missed one clear yellow card to New Zealand, but it was no bigger situation. The assistant referees had nothing to do and were good. However, he made an unexpected high number of mistakes in the midfield. But then let's focus on the bigger call and to my mind, the only big error of his perfomance: in the last minutes of the first half he whistled a striker-foul against Uruguay and therefore disallowed a goal which was scored just a few parts of a second after his whistle. There was no snatch or something like that, just a normal duel, if it was the other way round, he would not have awarded a penalty. I did not see a foul, it would have been the 1-0 for Uruguay, nobody knows how the result would have been if Uruguay had led..

Further matches

Although this perfomance was not good, I think that he will certainly get at least a 1/2 final. Along with O'Leary and Seneme he might be a candidate for...the final although the South American top referees may have a problem as their teams will probably go through into the last stages.
