English referee Michael Riley fell for Wiese's tricks. With almost every corner shot by AZ Wiese fell, or screamed or at least claimed to be hurt in someway and often enough the referee gave him the benefit of the doubt. With no doubt at all Riley cancelled a goal by AZ player Jaliens. Wiese fell for no reason and Jaliens touched the ball with his arm. But because Riley gave no explanation, it seemed he cancelled the goal because of Wiese's dive. If the reason was a hands ball, I think he was right.
Riley always stands close to the action, but he isn't always right. Modern football at this level is not just kicking a ball and the best team wins. There is much more going on and I think Riley was not really up to it. He sees a foul in almost every collision, then again gives advantage to players when necessary. He booked Donck and Wiese for no reason at all, maybe Wise got yellow carded because of his antics earlier in the game? Riley is good and not so good.
Speaking about smart: AZ had a 62% ball possession and 11 corner kicks against 4 for Werder. Az lost 4-1. That sounds pretty stupid to me.
