Valencia 1 - 2 Chelsea F.C.
Champions League 2006-2007 1/4 finals · 2007-04-10 Referee: Kyros Vassaras

uninvisible

always

Vassaras is a referee who always blows his whistle, whatever the situation. Oblivious to the fact that the ball is still with the team of the player who got pushed aside. Every minor very unimportant little foul was reason for the Greek to stop the game and talk to the culprit and his mates and angrily point at the exact spot where the free kick should be taken.

important

Things like the exact right place for a throw-in are important to Vassaras. When two balls happen to be on the field it is Vassaras who decides which ball will be played with, even when that particular ball is somewhere else and the players already have got one. Those things are important for the Greek. And he talks and he gestures and he waves with his finger and talks some more. He starts an argument, but does not allow a discussion. If you say something back he will book you. A good referee doesn't need to talk or explain anything. Vassaras is not one of those. Vassaras is not someone who believes a ref should be invisible. He is very univisible.

....

Of course he is not a really bad referee, he booked Ayala for hitting someone with his elbow for example. Something Ayala must have practised on because it was hard to see. Vassaras saw it. And most of his decisions were right, it's just that he made too many decisions, that he stopped everytime while the players of both teams wanted to move on.
