The journalist interviewed Antal Vegh, an author who had just finished a book called Gyogyitgatlan (incurable) about corruption in football. According to Vegh 4 or 5 Hungarians players had been bought with money coming from Emil Osterreicher, a Hungarian exile who later managed Real Madrid.
The day his article was published in the Netherlands, the Dutch journalist got a call in his hotel room by a man who threatened him and wanted him to give up the name of his interpreter.
Osterreicher sued Vegh and won because the author couldn't prove his allegations. The Dutch players who can remember the match say the Dutch goal was an exceptional one (a lob by Rob de Wit) and the Dutch goalie said he had a few narrow safes.
Dutch coach Leo Beenhakker remembers being visited by a Hungarian who offered him to throw the match. Other Hungarians later said Vegh's allegations are true.
