The Hungarians seemed to be unbeatable the best team in the world. They won the first match 8-3, but the final is what it's all about and this time, against all odds, the Germans won. The most famous Hungarian, Major Ferenc Puskas scored an off-side goal in the 86th minute, flagged by Welsh lines man Griffiths. After the match, instead of a hand shake, Bill Ling received an angry push by goalie Grosics.
For the (West-) Germans, this will for ever be the "Miracle of Bern", a final more important than all the other finals they played (and sometimes won).

Grosics

Hungary was a dictatorship. Losing the World Cup was not an option in the minds of the leaders. When the team came home they faced an angry crowd and an even angrier regime. Goalie Grosics, known as someone with dissident ideas, was arrested, imprisoned and abused for 15 months.. Finally released he was sent to a kind of exile, playing for provincial Tatabanya.
