Brazil 4 - 2 Chile

Garrincha

But

Brazil needed their star for the final against Czechoslavakia.
Brazilian politicians and diplomats began working on it. First the Uruguayan linesman, Esteban Marino, who had seen what happened was persuaded to go home, in case he was going to be heard. Then the Peruvian ambassador was recruited to speak to Yamasaki. (think of the implications of this: the president of Brazil calling the president of Peru - promising him things - the president of Peru calling one of his ministers, the minister calling the ambassador...). Yamasaki revoked his decision and Garrincha played in the final (but he did not score).
